Graffiti can often be seen as a sign of urban decay and instability. It is true to say that the public avoid these areas and local business will suffer.

Graffiti tolerance leads to escalation of the problem and further disfigurement of building facades. The long-term protection of facades with non-sacrificial anti-graffiti coatings reduces the problem, providing a more attractive and secure environment with significant financial savings.

ACS Graffiti Shield is a high performance, one pack permanent, non-sacrificial coating system, which allows the repeated easy removal of graffiti. The product is a clear, water vapour permeable coating, which will not essentially alter the appearance of the protected surface.

Protect facades with non-sacrificial anti-graffiti coatings

Preparation

1. All surfaces to be treated must always be clean, dry and sound.

2. Remove any loose, flaking or peeling paint and coatings.

3. Make good any damaged surfaces, repair cracks and mortar joints and defective
gutters and downpipes (to ensure the subsequent treatments are not subjected to
water spoilage).

Removal and obliteration of existing graffiti

The removal or obliteration of existing graffiti will depend on the type of substrate:-

1. On porous surfaces that have not been protected with an anti-graffiti coating use
ACS Bare Surface Graffiti Remover ( BSGR). Apply ACS BSGR liberally on to
areas of graffiti, working in well where possible. Allow to react for 10 to 20
minutes and remove residues with excess water, power washing wherever
possible. Repeat process until graffiti shadows have been removed satisfactorily.

2. On painted surfaces partly remove existing graffiti using white spirit to prevent
residues coming through any over coatings. Wash down surfaces with sugar soap
solution to remove all traces of the solvent and allow to thoroughly dry.
Apply ACS Colour Coat or pigmented ACS Epoxy Adhesion Promoter on hard,
impervious surfaces or where there are residual glazes from former antigraffiti
coatings.

3. In some situations the use of the biodegradeable water based ACS GPR 310, 320 or 400 may be more appropriate. Please consult the technical department for details.

Priming

Surfaces will require priming depending on the substrate, porosity or whether they have been subject to other antigraffiti coatings:-

1. On any porous substrate apply one coat ACS Non Darkening Sealer to the prepared
surface and allow to dry thoroughly, usually 2 to 4 hours depending on conditions.

2. On hard impervious surfaces such as tiles or where there is evidence of previous
use of antigraffiti coatings apply one thin coat of ACS Epoxy Adhesion Promoter,
thinned with up to 10% water if required.

Application

1. Apply ACS Graffiti Shield and other ACS coatings with brush or short-haired roller.

2. Apply ACS Graffiti Shield only to suitably prepared surfaces.

3. Always apply two coats ACS Graffiti Shield evenly. Allow first application to touch dry
before second coat is applied.

Availability and Coverage

The ACS Graffiti Shield and other products are normally available in 5L containers.
ACS Graffiti Shield is available as a clear matt or gloss finish. ACS Colour Coat and Epoxy Adhesion Promoter (pigmented) are available in selected colours.

ACS Graffiti Shield : 8 to 10 sq.m/litre
ACS Non Darkening Sealer : 8 to 10 sq.m/litre

Weather protection with high performance, durable silicone resin emulsion paints

Silicone resin emulsion paints have outstanding properties, resembling mineral systems, which make them ideal for façade design and preservation. The main properties are very low water absorption (high water repellence) and very high water vapour permeability coupled with extreme durability, offering excellent cost effectiveness.

Silicone resin emulsion paints have been used successfully in Europe for many years and are now being manufactured for the first time in the UK by ACS Ltd.

ACS Masonrycote Hi-Life Silicone Resin Paint has been formulated to offer specific properties:-

Excellent water repellence to protect the façade
Excellent water vapour permeability, preventing blistering, cracking and peeling
Extremely low dirt pick up
Good alkali resistance, opacity and enhanced adhesion to masonry surfaces
Water based which can be applied to damp surfaces
Contains a biocide for the sole purpose of protecting the paint in the can and the applied paint film
Durable with extended performance for many years
Savings on costs and repairs

How to apply weather protection

Preparation and Priming

Surfaces to be painted must always be clean and sound.
Remove any loose, flaking or peeling paint or other coatings.
Remove any organic growth (lichen, fungus, algae) with a stiff brush and treat the surface with Boracol 10RH. Make good any defects, repair major or surface cracks and any defective gutters and down pipes.
Dusty or chalky surfaces require stiff, thorough brushing to remove old paint residues and debris (limewash, distemper) before brush applying a liberal coat of ACS Masonrycote Hi-Weather Primer. Porous surfaces or surfaces of uneven absorption should also be treated with ACS Masonrycote Hi-Weather Primer.
New work must be allowed to cure for several days and should be free from efflorescent salts.
Efflorescence must be removed by dry wiping or brushing followed by wiping with a damp cloth. The surface then should be left for 48 hours to see if efflorescence reoccurs. DO NOT PROCEED UNTIL EFFLORESCENCE HAS CEASED

Application

1. Prepare surfaces as required (see General Surface Preparation and Priming); repairing major or surface cracks.
Apply Boracol 10RH or ACS Masonrycote Hi-Weather Primer if there is organic growth on the surface or the substrate is unstable.
2. Apply two coats of ACS Masonrycote Hi-Life Silicone Resin Paint by brush, roller or spray, allowing 2 to 4 hours between coats.
3. Do not apply in wet weather or on to very damp surfaces where there is free
water.
4. Clean brushes and equipment with water.

Average coverage 8 to 10sq.m/ litre depending on porosity and roughness of surface.

On rough brickwork, pebbledash, coverage could be reduced to 3 to 4sq.m/ litre.

Drying times are dependent upon weather conditions and ambient temperatures. ACS Masonrycote Hi-Life Silicone Resin Paint will be touch dry under normal conditions from between 2 - 4 hours.
